Leading-edge cluster – Leading-edge research

EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr

Winning the German government’s Leading-Edge Cluster competition and founding EffizienzCluster Logistik e. V. and EffizienzCluster Management GmbH added EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr to the already existing innovation ecosystem of logistics and IT at the Dortmund location. The highly relevant and technologically compelling results from the cluster’s research and innovation projects on digitization and autonomization have given logistics and IT a particular boost both nationally and internationally.

In 2010, 120 companies and eleven research institutions joined forces to make the logistics of tomorrow more individual and efficient in a total of 30 research projects with a total volume of 100 million euros.

The EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr focused on the topics of digitization and automation in logistics. In many of the research and innovation projects that were funded as part of the German government’s Leading-Edge Cluster Competition until 2015, science and business worked hand in hand to develop solutions for Industry 4.0 – in line with the cluster’s guiding principle of “increasing efficiency through autonomization”.

In the process, more than 100 “building blocks for efficient logistics” were created – results, partial results and interim results from the research projects that form nuclei and foundations for innovative products and services. Today, companies in the Metropole Ruhr are using the potential of these highly relevant and technologically convincing research results to build efficient logistics.

Even after the end of funding from the Leading-Edge Cluster Competition, the topic of digitization was firmly anchored in the cluster. On the one hand, new innovation projects explored which research is being conducted on Industry 4.0 technologies. On the other hand, logistics companies were supported through innovation and strategy workshops in making themselves prepared for the age of Industry 4.0. These activities are being continued today in various follow-up projects.

In parallel to EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr, the major scientific institutions at the Dortmund location have driven forward numerous initiatives and projects in the field of logistics and digitization in recent years, thus creating further structures for sustainable innovation development in the high-tech logistics sector.

One result is the Digital Hub Logistics – a unique ecosystem for the digital transformation of logistics and “successor” to the EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr. The aim is to support the development and faster dissemination of innovative products and processes. An essential basis for the development of specific formats and services is the networking of partners from science, business and society.
